AI Is Changing the Market. Does Your Portfolio Need to Change Too?

Artificial intelligence is transforming businesses, attracting enormous amounts of investment, and generating plenty of headlines. For investors, all of that activity raises an understandable question: Should AI’s rapid growth change the way we manage our portfolios?

Before making changes, it helps to separate what is possible from what is probable.

There are many possible outcomes for AI. The technology could contribute to greater productivity, create new sources of revenue, and become increasingly integrated into everyday business. At the same time, companies are spending tremendous amounts on AI infrastructure without knowing exactly how quickly those investments will pay off. Data centers require capital, electricity, permits, and other resources, while regulation or slower-than-expected adoption could create additional challenges.

Rather than reacting to every possible scenario, investors can look for evidence that helps determine which outcomes are becoming more probable. AI-related revenue, adoption outside the technology sector, productivity improvements, profit margins, and the relationship between capital spending and cash flow are among the factors worth watching.

Then there is another important consideration: price.

Even if we believe AI will have a profound economic impact, that does not automatically mean every AI-related investment is attractive at its current valuation. Market prices may already incorporate very optimistic expectations. When valuations are elevated, even relatively small disappointments can sometimes result in significant price movements.

Only after considering possibilities, probabilities, and prices should we ask whether changes to a portfolio are warranted.

For long-term investors, that does not necessarily mean abandoning stocks or moving large amounts of money into cash. Instead, this may be an appropriate time to review whether certain investments have grown beyond their intended allocations, whether your portfolio has become overly concentrated in particular companies or sectors, and whether your overall risk level still matches your goals and time horizon. Maintaining diversification across asset classes, regions, and market segments can also help reduce dependence on any single outcome.

New technology can create both opportunities and uncertainty. Neither excitement nor fear should determine your investment strategy.
