Keep Yourself Safe From Social Security Fraud

What would you do, if you received a call from a Social Security representative informing you of a problem with your benefits? Understandably, you might feel frightened, and want to comply with their directions immediately. No one wants to lose their benefits or endure months of hassle with confusing paperwork.

Unfortunately, con artists are well aware of these fears, and use them against us. They also access technology that allows them to create convincing telephone numbers, so that your Caller ID can trick you. Unless you have called Social Security yourself, and requested a callback, they will never call you about “problems” related to your benefits or account. Instead, Social Security sends letters in the mail, containing clear instructions in the event of an overpayment or other problem.

So, if you receive one of these calls, how do you protect yourself?

It’s simple: Hang up the phone right away. Do not verify any identifying information, and do not make a payment of any type!

Then, call Social Security’s fraud hotline, at 1-800-269-0271 to report the call.

If you’re still concerned that something might be wrong with your account or benefits, call Social Security yourself. That way, you know for certain that you are talking to a real representative. This person can check the status of your benefits, and reassure you that nothing is wrong. Alternately, you can also visit your local Social Security office in person.

Remember, if there is ever a problem with your Social Security benefits, you will receive a letter in the mail. In this case, no news is good news! Your benefits should continue, uninterrupted, if you have not been notified of a problem by mail.
